Official

The Official Languages Act 1963 states Hindi and English to be the official communication languages.

Scheduled

The Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution has given 22 languages recognition, status and official encouragement as the scheduled languages of India.

Classical

In addition, the Government of India has awarded the distinction of classical language to Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Sanskrit, Tamil and Telugu. This status is given to languages with a rich heritage and independent nature.

No language has been given the status of the national language of India.
