In memory of Swagat M. Shah, a star of the Gujarat LGBT community
Swagat Shah was born on 12th August 1976 in Kolkata in a business class family of social workers. He studied at Lahore Montessori School, Mussoorie Modern School, and Bal Bharti public school, Delhi. Swagat was a voice-over artist, an occasional fashion stylist, and sometimes organized events for close friends. He was also a marriage alliance coordinator for royal and noble families, invested in real estate and in antique jewellery.
Swagat fiercely and actively lobbied for the rights of the LGBT Community, male/female/transgender sex workers and HIV+ people on national/international platforms. He liked networking with like-minded people to gather support and funds to start their dream project Aashray. Swagat founded Gujarat LGBT Pride Festival, an initiative to conduct pride marches across the Gujarat state. He was the main organiser of Gujarat’s first LGBT Pride march in Surat.

Swagat was all set to host the third pride march of Gujarat in Baroda but passed away untimely on 29th September 2014, just a month before the pride.
Ashray is a care home for LGBT community M/F/T sex workers and HIV + people.
In 2013, Swagat played a key role in organizing the first pride march in Surat, Gujarat. He founded Gujarat LGBT Pride Festival, an initiative to conduct pride marches across the Gujarat state.
