These poems were written at a time when mainstream presses still published poetry; I remain ever grateful to David Davidar, then chief of Penguin India, who took a chance on an unknown writer. Also, at that time, the LGBT movement was in its infancy in India; at least one reviewer assumed the relationship poems were addressed to men.
I have removed several poems, lightly revised and retitled others, and rearranged the sections.
Some of these poems later appeared in anthologies: Sita, Sisters, Swayamvara, Fire, Effluence, in The Bloodaxe Book of Contemporary Indian Poets edited by Jeet Thayil (Bloodaxe Books: Highgreen, Northumberland, 2008); Distance, in Confronting Love: Contemporary Indo-Anglian Love Poetry edited Jerry Pinto and Arundhati Subramaniam (New Delhi: Penguin, 2005).
